Political System

 

Formation of the structure of the political system of the Republic of Azerbaijan has completed with adoption of the new Constitution of the country on November 12 of 1995. In accordance with the Constitution, the state of Azerbaijan has been determined as a democratic, legal, secular and unitary republic. The people of Azerbaijan are the sole source of the state governance.

 

In accordance with the principle of division of power, there are three branches of power that have been independently formed and are functioning: legislative, executive and judiciary power. The activity of each of these organs of power is regulated by the Constitution and legislative acts.

 

Milli Majlis (the Parliament) is the organ of the legislative power of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the President is the head of the executive power, and the courts of the Republic of Azerbaijan are the organ of the judiciary power.

 

Just like in all the modern political systems, the political system of Azerbaijan has also got the multi-party system and pluralism. The political parties have an opportunity to participate in the state governance process through representation in the legislative organs and local government authorities.
