Once a symbol of industrial strength during the Soviet era, the Shahbulag limestone quarry in Aghdam was renowned for producing millions of precision-cut building stones each year. In 1991, plans were in place to extract 16 million stones across 7 operational fields. Unfortunately, during the First Karabakh War, the area was occupied, and the quarry ceased operations.
Today, a powerful revival is underway!
In 2022, the "Azerbaijan Investment Company" OJSC revitalized this sector. Thanks to the investments made, the Shahbulag limestone deposit was brought back into operation, and stone cutting resumed. The aim is to supply the region with high-quality and affordable construction materials needed for the rapid construction and restoration efforts underway in Karabakh.
And Shahbulag is not the whole story! A cement plant in Khojaly, once operational, has also been rebuilt and reopened. Together, these two major production hubs – stone and cement – form the foundation of every home being built and every road being laid in Karabakh.
This initiative goes beyond just construction materials – it breathes new life into the region’s economy. Already, 153 new jobs have been created for local people. Logistics costs are decreasing, and the product prices are now more competitive.
Most importantly, projects like these lay a strong foundation for the revival of Karabakh.
